Our aim is to contribute to the production and sharing of information in the relevant fields of social sciences at the national and international levels. 

The aim of the journal was also explained by Ord. Prof. Dr. Aydın Sayılı as "to represent Turkish culture, our national culture". To achieve this goal, Sayılı said: "Our first condition is to work within a completely scientific framework and to present ERDEM as a journal that represents scientific research activity in the first place."

Subject Areas:
ERDEM journal publishes academic articles on Social Sciences and Humanities, especially in the fields of literature, art history, sociology, philosophy, geography, folklore, cultural studies, literary reviews, music, urban studies, philosophy and history of science, theater and translation.

ERDEM Editorial Principles

Scientific articles prepared in the field of social sciences in the journal of Erdem are published by the decision of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Erdem if the referee enters the process and receives two approvals. DOI numbers are assigned to all articles published in the journal. Articles submitted in accordance with ERDEM publication rules are checked for plagiarism before publication.

Erdem journal has adopted an open access policy. Open access provides useful results for humanity by increasing the speed and scope of information dissemination. Erdem journal is prepared and published by using public resources and does not charge the authors; pays royalties to the authors and referees according to the provisions of the related regulation.

• Article submission to ERDEM journal via https://yaysis.ayk.gov.tr/BasimYayin/login. The name of the institution is made by selecting the Atatürk Cultural Center Presidency and the journal name ERDEM.

Erdem, published by Atatürk Culture Centre, is a peer- reviewed international journal that publishes articles on humanities and social sciences. It is published twice a year in June and December. The articles should be in accordance with scientific research criteria, contribute to related fields, and not have been published elsewhere. Symposium papers may be accepted for publication if they are not published before.

Review of Articles

• The articles submitted to Erdem are reviewed by the Editorial Board in terms of publishing principles. Those which are in accordance with the publication criteria are sent to two referees. The authors take referee suggestions into consideration, but they have the right to oppose to the points they do not agree.

• The articles accepted for publication are sent to the authors in pdf format after their page setup is done. The author reads the article for proof and makes necessary corrections and sends it back.

• The opinions expressed in the articles are authors’ solely.

• The authors are paid for their articles. The copyright for published articles resides with Atatürk Culture Centre, and this includes the publication of the article on the net.

• Unpublished articles are not returned to authors.

The Language

• Erdem is published in Turkish. However, articles in English or in other Turkish dialects may also be published on condition that it does not exceed one fifth of an issue. The articles submitted to the journal should be in harmony with academic language use. 

Style Guidelines

• Articles should be typed with MS Word or compatible programmes. Text should be written in Times News Roman font type, 12 font size, 1.5 spaced and pages should be numbered. Articles should not exceed 6000 words. Special fonts should not be used and if there are signs of transcription, they must be pointed out for editing.

• The name and surname of the author should be written in bold letters; academic title, institution and e-mail adress should be written in normal letters in footnote.

• Titles should be coherent with the content of the article, and written in bold letters, not exceeding 10 words.

• At the beginning of the article there should be an abstract in Turkish, and an abstract in English, each including between 350-400 words. Abstracts have to be typed with 12 font size, and 5 to 8 keywords from general to specific have to be supplied.

• Titles should be written in bold letters. It is suggested better to use headings in long articles. All main and subheadings (parts, bibliography, and appendix) should be written in bold letters.

• The parts to be emphasized in the text should be in “quotation marks”, not in bold or italics. Both “quotation

marks” and italics or both bold and italics cannot be used at the same time.

• Direct quotations are written in “quotation marks”. Quotations that exceed 4 lines are blocked. Use tab command for indentations, and for long quotations 2 tabs from the left margin. Use 12 font size for long quotations.

• TDK Yazım Kılavuzu is to be taken as the basis for spelling except for special occasions.

 

Citations and Bibliography

• Footnote and bibliography should be coherent in writing style.The names of long works (books, journals, newspapers etc.) are written in italic letters and short works (article, story, poem etc.) are written in “quotation marks”. Also it is suggested that footnotes should only be used for additional information not included in text.

• References within the text should include the surname of the author, year of the publication, and page number in parantheses as follows: (Köprülü 1932: 120).

If the name of the author is used in the sentence, there is no need to mention it in parantheses: (1932: 120).

• For articles with more than one author, names should be referred as: (Jameson ve Habermas, Lyotard 1990).

• If a work has a compiler, translator, publisher or editor, it should be cited in the bibliography.

• Author, title, and publication date should be given for electronic sources. Also access date should be given in parantheses.

• Using secondary sources should be avoided.

• Works, that are not referred to in the text, should not be cited in the Bibliography.

 

Bibliography

• Bibliography should be given at the end of the article. Bibliographical information is to be ordered alphabetically as exemplified below. Publisher of the works and page numbers of the articles should be indicated.

Publication Ethics
It is aimed that all parties (authors, editors, referees and editorial boards) that have put forward a scientific study contribute to the proper progress of science. Compliance with scientific ethical principles is important in scientific studies prepared in accordance with this aim.
These ethical principles are based on the guidelines and policies published by Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). ERDEM Journal guarantees to adopt, fulfill and carry out the following ethical responsibilities of all parties at all stages of the publication process.

Ethical Responsibilities of the Editorial Board
ERDEM journal is published by the Presidency of Atatürk Culture Center. The Editorial Board of the Journal acts with the awareness of the following ethical responsibilities:
The ERDEM Journal Editorial Board (Hereinafter, the “Editorial Board”) and the Editors/Assistant Editors are responsible for each article submitted to ERDEM Journal and even for all processes after its publication.
The Editorial Board is expected to voluntarily comply with international standards (ethical principles set by the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE): https://publicationethics.org/).
The Editorial Board is obliged to protect the property and copyright of each published article and to keep a record of every published copy.
The Editorial Board encourages academic integrity. The Editorial Board determines and secures the authenticity of the written works by auditing it through the plagiarism prevention program intihal.net prior to the publication of these works.
The Editorial Board should always be ready to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies if necessary.
The Editorial Board makes suggestions to increase the national and international recognition of ERDEM Journal.
The Editorial Board keeps the articles in all issues of the journal accessible electronically for free.

Ethical Responsibilities of Editors/Assistant Editors
Editors and Assistant editors of ERDEM Journal must act on the basis of the open access guidelines published by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) such as "COPE Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors", "COPE Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors" and “Code of Conduct”, and must have the following ethical duties and responsibilities:
The Editors/Assistant Editors are  expected to voluntarily comply with international standards (ethical principles set by the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE): https://publicationethics.org/).
The Editors/Assistant Editors are responsible for the publication of each article published in the journal in accordance with the journal publication policies and international standards.
Editors/Assistant Editors are responsible for taking measures related to intellectual property rights, unscientific-unethical behavior and plagiarism in the process of publishing articles and journals.
Editors /Assistant Editors, when deciding on the publication of articles, make sure that the articles are original and contribute to the readers, researchers and practitioners.
Editors/Assistant Editors, when making positive or negative decisions about articles, take into account the original value of the articles, their contribution to the field, the validity and reliability of the research method, the clarity of the narrative and the purpose and scope of the journal.
The Editors/Assistant Editors implement the blind refereeing and evaluation process policies included in the publication policies of the journal, keep the credentials of the referees confidential, and ensure that each article is evaluated decisively and within the period.
Editors/Assistant editors take into account whether there is a conflict of interest or unity of interest between the editors, referees and author(s) for an unbiased evaluation of the article.
Editors/Assistant Editors ensure the protection of personal data in the articles being evaluated; they protect the personal data of the author, the reviewer and the readers.
Editors/Assistant Editors take care of the protection of human and animal rights in articles, they care about the certification of the explicit approval of the participants of the article, the approval of the ethics committee for the participants of the article, and they reject the article when they do not have permission for experimental research.
Editors/Assistant Editors ensure that errors, inconsistencies, or misdirections in articles are corrected.
Editors/Assistant Editors are obliged to respond in an enlightening and explanatory way by carefully examining complaints from the author, the referee and the readers.

Ethical Responsibilities of Referees
All articles submitted to ERDEM journal are evaluated through a double-sided blind refereeing process. Double-sided blind refereeing means keeping the authors confidential from the referees and the referees confidential from the authors in order to ensure an impartial, objective and independent evaluation process. Articles are sent to the referees from the journal management system (YAYSIS) for evaluation. Referees are required to fill out a form containing the contribution of the article they are evaluating to their field of study and their decisions about whether the article is publishable and their reasons for these decisions. The ethical responsibilities and roles of the referees of ERDEM journal are as follows:
Referees are expected to voluntarily comply with international standards (ethical principles set by the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE): https://publicationethics.org/).
Referees are required to referee articles related only to their field of expertise.
Referees should act with the awareness that they are the most fundamental determinant of the academic quality of the article to be published in the journal and evaluate it with the responsibility of improving academic quality.
Referees must comply with the principle of confidentiality, they are obliged not to use the information obtained from the arbitration process for their personal benefit; they should not share their reports or information about the article with others.
When the referees understand that there is a conflict or unity of interest, they should inform the editors, refusing to evaluate the article.
Referees should only evaluate the accuracy of the content of the articles and their compliance with academic criteria. Whether the opinions expressed in the article differ from the opinions of the referee should not affect the evaluation.
Referees should conduct the evaluation in a constructive manner in accordance with academic etiquette and avoid personal comments containing insults and hostility.
In case of any abuse of the author(s) (e.g., plagiarism or similar unethical activities), they should immediately inform the relevant editor.
Referees are required to complete their evaluations within the time given to them and are expected to comply with the ethical responsibilities set out above.

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors
The author(s) are expected to voluntarily comply with international standards (ethical principles set by the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE): https://publicationethics.org/).
Articles submitted for publication should not contradict the ethics of scientific research and publication contained in the “Regulation on Scientific Research and Publication Ethics in Higher Education Institutions” (plagiarism, forgery, distortion, republication, slicing, unfair authorship, other types of ethical violations).
It is expected that the submitted articles will have original content that contributes to their fields. Authors cannot make an article submission that is created by largely verbatim copying from the contents of their previously published books to ERDEM. This situation is considered as a clear ethical violation, ethical violation procedures are officially initiated against the author, the article is withdrawn, and this violation is shared with the relevant Institutions and announced in the necessary platforms.
Applications can be made with the texts of articles created using scientific data obtained as a result of master's, doctoral theses and research projects - provided that the source is specified.
Author(s) are required to refer and/or quote all the resources that they use in their article (authors, online pages, personal interviews, etc.) in a complete and accurate form.
The author(s) may not have their works in the application process of more than one journal at the same time. Each application can be started after the completion of the previous application. A work published in another journal cannot be sent to ERDEM Journal.
Scientific articles submitted to the journal must take the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics)'s International Standards for Editors and Authors into account.
The name of the people who did not contribute to the article should not be written as the author. Changing the author order, removing and/or adding the author is not recommended for articles submitted for publication.
The author(s) should inform the editors about the people that have unity of interest and/or conflict of interest with the article submitted for publication.
The author(s) may be asked for raw data on their articles within the framework of the evaluation processes, in such a case, the author(s) should be ready to submit the expected data and information to the editorial board and the scientific board.
The author(s) must certify that they have the rights to use the data they use in their articles, the permissions related to research-analysis or the approval and consent of the participants they are researching on have been obtained.
If the authors notice any mistakes in their articles that is in the evaluation and early access stage or that is published online, they are required to contact the editor to provide information and to correct or withdraw their article.
The author(s) must indicate on the first-last page and method section of the candidate article the name, decision date and issue of the ethics committee approval and upload the document indicating the decision of the ethics committee to the system along with the application of the article for the research that requires collecting data by quantitative or qualitative methods such as experiment, survey, scale, interview, observation, focus group study that requires a decision of the ethics committee. In addition, information about the receipt of the informed consent form in case reports should be included in the article.
The author(s) must provide evidence that they have regarded the ethical principles in the data collection process (such as obtaining permission from others to use documents such as scales, questionnaires, photographs) within the article. It should be noted that the articles comply with research and publication ethics, as well as copyright regulations for ideas and works of art.

Reporting A Situation That Breaches Ethical Principles To The Editor
If an unethical situation regarding an article that is in the evaluation process, early access or published in the ERDEM Journal appears, or if there is a situation or behavior regarding authors, referees or editors that does not comply with the ethical principles occurs, it must be reported via the internet adress erdemdergisi@akmb.gov.tr.
